Madhuri Dixit

Madhuri Dixit launched the music of her upcoming film, Gulaab Gang in Varanasi, outfitted in a Pankaj and Nidhi churidar ensemble.

The story line deals primarily with women’s empowerment and the film will release in cinemas across the country on International Women’s Day, the 7th of March.

Sources have it that the grounds where the event took place was packed to the gills with more than twenty thousand people in attendance. They were all there to cheer Madhuri and showed their support for the film wearing gulaabi (pink) caps.

If that was not enough of a show of support, a number of girl students from various schools and colleges performed dances and dramas at the event to enforce the film’s social message.

Madhuri plays Rajjo Devi, a tough activist who fights for women’s rights and issues. At the launch, she said, “A daughter keeps the balance intact in a family. There should be a sense of equality between a man and woman present in society. My character Rajjo in the film is fighting for the same cause. The character may be different from Madhuri as a person but Madhuri agrees and stands with Rajjo. The story of Gulaab Gang is a piece of my heart.”

Best known as Bollywood’s sweetheart, the film also stars Juhi Chawla, who plays her first negative role in a Bollywood film. Incidentally, Juhi and Madhuri were considered rivals in their heyday in the nineties. In fact, they have never acted in a film together before this.

The story is based on a group of real-life women who call themselves the Gulabi Gang. This fierce group of women from the Bundelkhand region in Uttar Pradesh, work for the well-being of other women who face various social problems like violence and domestic abuse.

Rekha

Reports doing the rounds currently suggest that Rekha has been signed on for Abhishek Kapoor‘s Fitoor, which is the Hindi adaptation of the Charles Dickens novel, Great Expectations. Sridevi was originally approached for this role (which is of the character Miss Havisham in the novel), but word has it that she refused the project due to the negative shades of the character. However, it looks like Rekha has agreed to do this film, although she may not have formally signed the agreement as of yet.

Fitoor also stars Katrina Kaif and Aditya Roy Kapur, who was signed on to do the film after Sushant Singh Rajput reportedly opted out due to date issues (it was clashing with Shekhar Kapur‘s Paani).

Sidharth Malhotra‘s Hasee Toh Phasee is up for release. He has been spotted with co-star Parineeti Chopra around town promotion the film too. Even before his second film releases, news has it that he has been signed on by Siddharth Roy Kapur to star in a remake of French film, Priceless. The film will also be co-produced by Karan Johar, who introduced Sidharth to Bollywood. Now, this is an interesting development, given the huge female fan following Sidharth already has, given his good looks.

We may not know how things are between Anurag Kashyap and his wife of French origin, Kalki Koechlin. But the director recently flew to Paris to shop for Ranbir Kapoor for the next schedule of Bombay Velvet. Apparently, Anurag met French designers in the fashion capital and shared pictures with Ranbir Kapoor while he was there for this period look. And while at it, he picked up some patterns for Ranbir’s co-star in the film, Anushka Sharma. This is one project that has generated quite a lot of curiosity and we’re waiting to see how it turns out.

Shooting on homeland, in Kashmir, may not have been that easy for Shahid Kapoor and Irrfan Khan. Currently in Srinagar for Haider, the two were shooting with an onlooking crowd. And it seems a kangri (a pot filled with coal embers) came hurling at them and just missed them. While it’s not clear if someone deliberately threw it at the actors or it slipped and went flying, they seemed to have a close shave. Of course, the local police personnel were by their side and they’re safe.

Aamir Khan

Aamir Khan is known for doing one film at a time, but as of late, the actor has been incredibly busy. First, he had to wrap up the shooting of Dhoom 3, then he had to finish a schedule of P.K., then there was the promotion rounds, Dhoom 3‘s actual release, the subsequent success party, and finally work for the second season of Satyamev Jayate. Now, though, the actor has finally cleared a window out of his schedule so that he can take a break for the first time in a year and a half.

The actor is now taking ten days off so that he can head to Europe to unwind and spend some time by himself, and – of course – read some scripts while he’s at it. Meanwhile, the promos of Satyamev Jayate 2 have already been on air since Republic Day. The show is slated to kick off from March 2nd, 2014.

Here’s wishing Aamir a good break, and we hope he narrows down on some interesting projects while he’s out of the country.

In fact, did you know that there were rumours of Veena having been married to banned Pakistani cricketer Mohammed Asif? These stories surfaced around the time of her Veena Ka Vivah TV show and it had the Indian television industry up in arms over the fact that she was cheating her audience by claiming to be unmarried.

While none of that was proved, Veena was also dating her Bigg Boss housemate, Ashmit Patel, at the time of the Veena Ka Vivah TV show. She brought in the 2012 new year with Ashmit in Dubai. The two seemed pretty much in love and for his birthday that year, Veena tweeted a lovey-dovey photo of them together.

Fast forward to June 2012 and Veena was being courted by another actor – Raja Choudhary. Best known for his violent streaks and for allegedly beating up his ex wife Shweta Tiwari, Raja claimed he would change his name to Raja Malik if Veena agreed to marry him.

Considering the fact that both of them are so controversial, they should have definitely gotten married.

Shah Rukh Khan

I’ve already said that my favourite thing about Shah Rukh Khan is the 140-character nuggets of wisdom that he tweets ever so often (remember The Gospel According to Shah Rukh Khan?). Today, the actor, who has been recovering from the injury he sustained while on the sets of Happy New Year, had one more interesting thing to share. I guess, when you’re on bed rest, there’s little to do but contemplate. :)

Unfortunately, SRK really has been injured badly. While he played it off on the day it actually happened (he even returned to sets, although he had to go back to the hospital for tests later that evening), the actor is said to be in quite a bit of pain. His Happy New Year director, Farah Khan, claims that he has busted his knee, hurt his shoulder (which has always been an issue anyway) and also sustained a wound to the head. Still, he’s being a sport: according to Farah, any other actor would have taken a break for two months, but the team is only pushing back the shooting schedule back by a week. So, there shouldn’t be too much of a delay in the long run.

When they do resume, Farah is making it a point to start with easier scenes that won’t require him to dance or do any form of action until his injuries have healed.

Madhuri Dixit in Gulaab Gang

One of the most interesting things about Gulaab Gang is that mind-blowing action sequences that Madhuri Dixit performs. A look at the trailer (see it below if you haven’t already) leaves you spell bound with her quick reflexes and carefully choreographed movements when she’s lathi-charging the bad guys.

But did you know that Madhuri had to train extensively in martial arts to get her action sequences right?

Madhuri trained with Kanishk Sharma in martial art forms like Shaolin Kung Fu, Pekiti Tirsia Kali and Shaolin Chin-na.

Says the trainer, “Director Soumik Sen had given me a brief to design the stunts in an innovative manner so that they look aesthetic as well as realistic. It couldn’t be as gritty as Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, neither could it be as suave as The Matrix. Hence, I had to extensively train her in Shaolin Kung Fu, Pekiti Tirsia Kali and Shaolin Chin-na, all of which are ancient and rare forms of martial arts.”

Adds Sharma, “I was very impressed by Madhuri’s agility and her perfect timing during execution of the stunts. I remember a scene where Madhuri had to twist a man’s arm and kick him hard. I rehearsed it with her for a few hours before the shot and was overwhelmed at how comfortably she pulled it off during the shoot. Madhuri makes all the tiring action look effortless on screen!”

Apart from the martial arts, Kanishk has also extensively trained the film veteran in stick training, Shaolin joint locking, Kali knife, short stick and close combat.

Alia Bhatt in Highway

Ever since the promos of Highway have begun doing the rounds, we’ve only been noticing one thing – that Alia Bhatt looks waaay different from her Student of the Year avatar. It would have been so easy for her to not be taken seriously, because post-SOTY, there was (at least in some circles) the perception of her being nothing more than a glam doll and star kid. However, Highway seems to be giving everyone a pause, and if Alia does nail this role, then it’ll send out a clear message to everyone: she’s here to stay, and she’s not in the industry just because she’s Mahesh Bhatt‘s daughter.

The question, though, is whether she will nail the role. While the rest of us will have to wait until February 21st to find out, there are two people who have already been full of praises for her: Sidharth Malhotra and Varun Dhawan, her co-stars from her first film. During a recent press round for his own film, Hasee Toh Phasee, Sid claimed that Alia was very “spontaneous” and “energetic.” He also said that Highway would prove a lot for Alia as an actor, and she will surprise everyone: “You have seen nothing about Alia. Just wait and watch.”

Meanwhile, Varun ranked her at the top of the pile in the industry today, which is quite the compliment for someone who has only done two films. When asked on Kofffee With Karan to rank the female leads in terms of acting talent, Varun said, “I’ve seen Highway, so Alia, number one.” He then ranked the rest as: Deepika Padukone, Parineeti Chopra, Anushka Sharma, Sonam Kapoor.

Amish Tripathi’s debut novel from the Shiva trilogy

In 2012, it was announced that Bollywood director/producer, Karan Johar had snapped up the Hindi rights to Amish Tripathi‘s much celebrated and critically acclaimed Shiva trilogy of books.

Now, it has been disclosed that even the Hollywood rights for an adaptation in English, have been bought by an (as yet) unnamed producer.

In a statement to the Press Trust of India, Amish said, “I have signed the deal with a US producer for the first book with an option for the subsequent books. Unfortunately, I can’t disclose the name as of now but it will be announced shortly.”

The Oath Of The Vayuputras

The series of three books -The Immortals of Meluha, The Secret of the Nagas and The Oath of the Vayuputras – have sold over five hundred million copies in a span of three years. The first book was released in 2010 while the last was released in 2013.

Elli Avram

Even though Elli Avram is only one film old (she did Mickey Virus last year), we all know that she’s gunning to get her big Bollywood break from Salman Khan, who took a liking to her on Bigg Boss. We earlier reported that she may have to wait in order to get her first big Hindi film, since Salman Khan’s schedule is rather full and his co-stars have already been decided upon. However, Elli has an opening now, and if she’s lucky, she may just end up snagging a huge movie deal thanks to Sallu. Read on for Industrywalla‘s news.

Industrywalla says: Elli Avram’s big Bollywood ticket seems quite near. The Bigg Boss contestant, who has won over the heart of a certain Salman Khan, might just sign a big film opposite him in the coming days.

A reliable source has confirmed to me that Elli is being considered as the lead opposite Salman in Sooraj Barjatya‘s next. Surprising? Maybe, but remember how we told you that Deepika Padukone is in a fix because of her date tussle with Imtiaz Ali‘s film? If they are unable to work out a change in schedule so that Dippy can stay on, then it looks like her loss could very well be Elli’s gain.

It seems unlikely that Elli would have been on Sooraj’s radar prior to this, so we can assume that Salman has something to do with it. The same source confirms to me that Salman has indeed been pushing for Elli and asking the director to audition her for the part. Not surprising, considering that when Salman takes someone under his wings, he ends up helping them out with some project or another. But this all depends on what Barjatya actually thinks of Elli. If the director is OK with it, then the announcement might happen very soon!

If the strong rumours which are doing the rounds in Bollywood are to be believed, a rambunctious, enthusiastic and critically acclaimed actor will step into Salman Khan‘s shoes to host the next season of Bigg Boss later this year.

While Salman Khan has been a very popular host over the last few seasons of this voyeuristic reality show, we hear that he will not continue hosting it in the upcoming 8th season. In fact, he’s supposedly interested in doing a TV show which deals with social causes and issues.

Could the success of Aamir Khan‘s Satyamev Jayte have anything to do with that?

As for who is going to be stepping in to his shoes, we hear it will be none other than Ranveer Singh!

Yes, you read that right! Known for his high-energy, his no-holds-barred candor and his infectious charm, Ranveer will undoubtedly be a refreshing new host for Bigg Boss 8.

We’re given to believe that he is in talks with the production house that owns the rights to Bigg Boss and it seems highly plausible that he will indeed, sign on the dotted line.

Arjun Rampal

Who wouldn’t want to sit in Arjun Rampal‘s lap? Well, if the rumours are true, Arjun might soon open his famous nightclub, LAP, in Mumbai.

The one in Delhi, however, which opened to much fanfare in 2009, is reportedly in trouble with the Indian Tourism Development Corporation. Newspapers report that the star owes them over Rupees two crores in dues since October 2012 and has been sent an eviction notice on account of this payment lapse.

The ITDC runs the hotel at Chankyapuri in Delhi, where the nightclub is located.

The matter has now gone to court and is sub-judice. This is a slight relief since Rampal can still operate the restaurant until a verdict has been declared.

A press release issued on behalf of Arjun Rampal states, “The actor has been aggressively planning foray in Singapore, Dubai and London.”

It goes on to state that the rumours of the eviction are being spread by “A certain rival who is not quite happy with the actor’s success and is spreading baseless rumors about Arjun not agreeing to pay dues.”

The statement alleges, “It is sad to see people stoop so low, trying to bring down someone who is not only doing good business, but setting higher standards for others. Arjun is a stickler for following rules, and such rumours are just ridiculous.”

Even though Tanishaa Mukerji‘s interview with Bombay Times has just been printed on the front page today, it looks like all is not too well between her and Armaan Kohli. In the interview, she had said that Armaan is her best friend and has supported her 100%. However, I have it on good authority that Armaan and Tanishaa’s love story has hit a road block. No, they have not broken up, but they do have a few issues and have been fighting over them for some time now!

Their pictures from their Goa trip looked like they were happy and bonding, but this “honeymoon period,” if you want to call it that, is over. The two have been having many arguments, since Tanishaa has asked Armaan to give her a solid commitment, but he is hesitant to do so at this time. Actually, he’s more concentrated on giving his Bollywood career a second chance. Reportedly, he is planning on relaunching his father’s production house, Shankar films. Armaan has been reading some scripts to produce and will even probably consider acting in them as well if he can.

Despite their fights, this is not the end of the road for Armaan and Tanishaa. Yes, there is some friction and tension has been running high between them, but they are still a couple. Let’s hope that Tanishaa continues to get that same support from Armaan that she has said she’s always received. She did, after all, say he is very loyal and comes from a good place.

Ahana Deol’s wedding invitation

Hema Malini and Dharmendra‘s second daughter, Ahana Deol, ties the knot this weekend with her fiancé, Vaibhav Vora. Invitations have already been sent out, and they all feature the tree of life on them. The wedding functions kick off tomorrow (the 31st of January) with a comparatively small mehndi ceremony held in Juhu. The sangeet will be held the day after that, on the 1st of February. And on February 2nd, the two will officially get hitched. The varmala exchange will happen at Iskcon in the morning, and in the evening they will have the wedding pheras at ITC Maratha. The reception will take place in the same venue after the wedding ceremonies have been completed.

Of course, a number of celebrities are expected to attend, so keep your eye out for photos over the next few days!

Now this made our morning. Industrywalla just recounted a funny story for us when Salman Khan was asked to take a ‘selfie’ on sets recently. Unfortunately, the actor didn’t understand the term and was most confused! Here’s what Industrywalla wrote in to say:

Industrywalla says: “Selfie what?” That’s what Salman Khan asked someone when a bunch of fan girls ran up to him recently to take a photo! The results were hilarious, because Salman was stumped when they said they wanted to take a ‘selfie’ with him. The actor was not aware of what the word meant, so he had to ask a friend of his on set to explain what a selfie is. As for the fans – he even joked with these girls and asked them why they need to come up with such cryptic words when all they can say is ‘photo’!
