Alia Bhatt in Highway

I was obsessed with Patakha Guddi from Highway (the first song release from the film) after listening to it a few times. However, the second song release - Maahi Ve - is an instant favourite. It’s a fantastic, feel-good track sung by Mr A R Rahman himself, the music composer for this film. You shouldn’t think twice about giving this song a try!

Imtiaz Ali says:

“Maahi Ve is coming more from Rahman sir than from Irshad [Kamil, lyricist] or me. This is one of the songs that Rahman sir makes and one wonders how the hell does he get the soul of the the story so beautifully. Maahi Ve was not a part of the original brief but I cannot imagine the film or the album of Highway without it.”

Saying that Rahman captured the soul of the story is high praise indeed, because Imtiaz Ali has always insisted that the ‘soul’ of Highway is something he could never get out of his head. That’s why the story stuck with him for 15 whole years and why he’s making it now. When we interviewed him, he said, “[There's] something very distinct being said in the film. The soul of the film cannot be expressed in words, which is why we’ve made a film. But there was something that this girl, in this journey, was experiencing. I just couldn’t get that out.”

It’s great that this video focuses on the growing, unconventional relationship between these two characters, Veera and Mahabir (Alia Bhatt and Randeep Hooda). Whatever promos we’ve seen so far – including the trailer – have seemed to mostly focus on Alia and her character. This time around, however, we get to see a lot more of Randeep and the love story between the two characters. Even though Highway is going to be a lot about Veera’s personal journey and growth, there will be a romantic angle, because Imtiaz himself said that he keeps getting drawn to love as a concept. He told us, “It keeps happening. I don’t gravitate towards it. I don’t think while making a movie that it’ll be a love story. It’s perhaps my incomprehension of the term love that keeps me drawing towards stories that are then later categorised as love stories.”

That aside, how lovely does the video look? It’s shot across some beautiful parts of the country.

Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif

For a few days now, there have been rumours about Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif‘s relationship hitting a rocky patch, and fans were – understandably – concerned. The reports suggested that Katrina was looking for commitment from him, which he was unwilling to give, and therefore they had a fight about it while on holiday in New York. Those same rumours speculate that the fight was a possible reason for their separate return to Mumbai after the vacation.

Since MissMalini readers Deep and Hemant wanted to know whether all was okay between the two, we contacted Industrywalla, and he gave us all the details! Here’s what you need to know.

Industrywalla says: Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif are no different than any other regular couple. Aren’t small tiffs and fights a part of every relationship? In fact, RK and Deepika Padukone (in their glory days) used to have more arguments and fights than the ones being reported in the media now!

As for the rumours doing the rounds about there being a tiff between Katrina and Ranbir – they are completely false! They did not return separately because of any fight. RK had to come back earlier to honour a work commitment, while Kat stayed back to get some medical diagnosis for a situation she has been working on for a while. She was also in London for a short time, where she met up with her mother, who also returned with her to the city. So no, there is no truth to any squabble between the two… just like there was no truth to the news about RK proposing to her for marriage that was circulating a while ago! As for Ranbir not committing to Katrina… remember, it was a joint decision that the two made to not get married right now. Katrina is sure she wants to concentrate on her career as of now.

Kangana Ranaut

She’s known to be a fashion diva and a critically acclaimed, National Award winning actress to reckon with. But who knew that hottie Kangana Ranaut is also a very good cook?

According to sources from the set, Kangana was shooting in London for the song, London Thumakda, for her upcoming film, Queen. This, incidentally, was one of the coldest days the British Capital had witnessed this winter.

But after the shoot got over, Kangana personally whipped up a meal of Chinese delicacies for the entire cast and crew.

Says the source, “The crew was exhilarated and excited to know that the Chinese food served to them was actually cooked by Kangana. Needless to add, everybody was super Impressed with her cooking skills and complimented her unabashedly.”

In Queen, Kangana plays a small-town girl who goes off on her honeymoon to London – alone – because her marriage fell through. Needless to add, her naive character gets caught up in a couple of sticky situations.

The song is picturized around the mehendi ceremony with all the wedding preparations going on in the background.

Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan hugged again last night at the Star Guild Awards. They haven’t been on speaking terms since 2008 and have even gone to great lengths to avoid each other. While they shared a hug at an iftaar party last year, their friendship didn’t exactly revive. But last night, they shared an intense hug on stage. More details on that coming soon!

Sonakshi Sinha

Sonakshi Sinha isn’t in the best of moods these days, thanks to the reception she and her film Lootera have received. The actress feels that two major award shows - Screen and Filmfare - have given Lootera the cold shoulder. She already expressed her disappointment on Twitter about Lootera not getting the kind of nominations she would have wanted it to (Vikramaditya Motwane for Best Director, for example), but she also feels that she has been overlooked to a great extent.

While Screen shortlisted Sonakshi for the nomination, they ended up giving Deepika Padukone the award for both the critics and popular choice categories. Meanwhile, at Filmfare, DPad received two nominations in the same category, for Chennai Express and Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela. This upset Sonakshi a little, and after the Screen Awards ceremony she was overheard telling a friend that she felt cheated.

Unfortunately for her, at the Star Guild Awards held last night, Sonakshi didn’t receive an award for Lootera either. Once again, Deepika walked away with the night’s biggest trophy.

However, although Sonakshi is feeling a bit shortchanged, I hear her dad has been cheering her up. He has advised her not to take this to heart.

After all, there is always next year, isn’t it? 2013 was Deepika’s year, but 2014 can belong to anybody!

Dressed in winter chic style with calf length boots and a leather jacket, we spotted this shapely lady taking in a film at a multiplex in Mumbai, last evening.

She was there to watch Sholay along with a well-known Bollywood superstar, who is currently in promotional overdrive for his upcoming film.

Here are a few hints:

* She won the Miss India contest way back in 1980.

* The first film she signed was called Hathyar.

* But the film which really got her noticed was Tridev, in 1989.

* She has just one Filmfare nomination to her name - for Best Supporting Actress for Jurm by Mahesh Bhatt.

* The Nineties saw her making her TV debut where she acted in the serial Chandni. She also hosted a show called Rangoli on Doordarshan, which was very popular at the time.

* She gave up acting almost 20 years ago, in 1995.

Hello! My name is Lekha Washington and I engage in safe, peaceful activities like sky diving or working as a lead actor in South Indian cinema. If I were to put it in one word, my career has been, how shall I put this politely? – Bat-s*&% crazy. So you think you know all there is to know about being a South Indian actress? Well, here’s 10 popular myths about South Indian cinema that I have been asked about countless times and I really feel like I need to set the record straight once and for all.

1) “Don’t all men have big moustaches down there?”

Well, I haven’t checked down there, but of the five actors I’ve worked with, four were clean shaven. Which is not to say there are no over-aged, overweight, sweaty moustached men around, but amongst the younger lot, it really isn’t a thing anymore. Really.

2) “Aren’t all women thunder thighed in south Indian cinema?”

Well, most of the top actresses currently here are – shock and scandal – pretty damn skinny. Probably to go with all the clean shaven men. Sure, there’s the odd big girl, but honestly, that’s a good thing as far as equal opportunity and promoting healthy body image is concerned.

3) “So, do you speak madrasi?”

There are four different film industries in the south – Telugu cinema, Tamil cinema, Kannada and Malyalam cinema. That’s four different languages. Four different nuances. Four different sets of emotional baggage. Madras used to be what Chennai was called and currently there is no language called madrasi. That’s like an American asking you if you speak Indian.

4) “There’s no casting couch there.”

Hahahahaha. It’s perhaps sometimes just a little cruder than bollywood, and all the game-playing exists.

5) “Don’t you just say one two three one two three and get away with not speaking the language?”

It depends on the language you’re working in – In Tamil, Telugu or Malyalam, there’s no way you can get away with not memorising or picking up prompts accurately, even if it’s phonetics to you. This is because the language is lip-distinct, it would be fairly obvious if you were reciting numbers. In Kannada cinema, there is a little more lee-way because the word pronunciation is a bit- marble-lly? – so you can get away with a little less distinctness. I still don’t think anyone begins to show off their counting skills though.

6) “The spot boys – and autowallahs, for that matter, know how to speak Hindi, but pretend not to understand me.”

While they might look like other spot boys or autowallahs you have encountered before, the truth is, they do not actually speak Hindi. They speak madrasi.

7) “It’s a patriarchal business.”

This is true. It is, in general, a male dominated, incredibly patriarchal buisness. Bollywood is, too, but less obviously. However, I have met some wonderful men who are quite refreshingly the opposite.

8) “Yenna Rascalla!!!”

If you have to learn one phrase in Tamil, learn it right! ‘Yenna’, meaning ‘what’ is correct. However, ‘Rascalla’ translates to ‘is it a rascal?’ and really doesn’t make any sense as a threat or show of bravado. It’s like asking if you really are the rascal I’m accusing you of being. If you must say it, it would be “Yenna, Rascal” or “Yenna da, Rascal”. Not “Rascalla”.

9) Here’s a really popular belief, I wish were absolutely true – “They really experiment, and make really good original films in the south” – a variation of it is “They are really professional in the south”.

I call this the grass is always greener syndrome. Let us ignore the fact that there is no one “south film industry” since I clarified earlier that there are four. The truth is that some teams are professional, some individual projects path breaking while some teams are maddeningly disorganised or mass entertainers or both. And I have heard countless times, filmmakers from the south looking towards Bollywood dreamy eyed and saying wistfully “They promote original content, they are so organized”. The grass is always greener. It’s who you work with, really, not which industry you work for.

10) “Rajinikant is God.”

Actually that one is true. He is God. Even in Japan.

Would you look at that – after hugging at Baba Siddique‘s iftaar party many months ago, Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan recently hugged it out again on the stage of the Star Guild Awards last night. The two ended up on stage together since Salman was hosting the show, and – at one point – Shah Rukh also had to get on there to accept his Entertainer of the Year award, which he received from co-star Deepika Padukone.

In fact, Shah Rukh even commented that it’s special to receive this award when he’s on the same stage as Salman Khan, who is one of the greatest entertainers in the country. Wow!

That’s not all, though. Before the hug even took place, there was already some interaction happening between the two. On stage, Salman congratulated the actor on the success of Chennai Express, and SRK waved in acknowledgment to his statement. The superstar also commented saying that SRK is the one who started “hosting’ in Bollywood, and he actually prefers acting more. A little later, Salman even asked SRK to say ‘Jai Ho’, since he has a film coming out with the same name. Promotion ke liye kuch bhi karega, yes?

Salman’s dad, Salim Khan, has said that he doesn’t think the two will ever be good friends ever again. However, we’re inclined to believe otherwise. While they may never be best friends, we think they’re well on their way to being friendly again. At least now there’s no reason for them to ignore each other in public, and they may even sort out their underlying issues – on Koffee With Karan, Salman did say that all Shah Rukh had to do to fix things was come to his house and talk to him.

Mohit Suri’s office

Mohit Suri seems to be a big believer in creating the right atmosphere to get his work done! The director has given his office space a complete overhaul in anticipation of his upcoming film, The Villain, which stars Sidharth Malhotra and Shraddha Kapoor. The reason behind this? He wants to create a sense of isolation and have the subject “grow organically” within each member of the team working on the film.

Since he’s got an interesting title with The Villain, he decided to redesign his entire office and put up photos of famous villains. He’s even taken it a step further by adding in some interesting elements that have some sort of connection with the concept of a villain – sceptres, cigars and spikes are just some of the things he’s used as part of his redecoration! To finish it all off, he’s now referring to his work space as “The Villains Den,” and refuses to call it his office. Nice!

Mohit Suri says:

It’s so boring to have a vanilla office. We have such a fun, commercial and unique title for our film. So I thought of giving the office a theme that was in line with the title. We refer to our office as “The Villains’ Den.” We don’t use the word ‘office’. It is extensively adorned by visuals of legendary Hollywood villains. It started off just as some inspirational images… turned into a collage… to wall art… and finally a theme office.”

This Villains Den was in use a lot when the team was in the pre-production stage, as all the sessions relating to the script, music and actors happened there. However, now that they are filming, Mohit has extended this environment to one of the production vanity vans, where all the briefings, planning meetings and scene decisions take place. It also doubles up as the space where the team members go for breaks/to regroup, so Mohit believes it helps to reattach them to the “film’s larger thought.”

Sunny Leone and Yo Yo Honey Singh

Earlier this week, we told you that the sexy Sunny Leone and controversial singer Yo Yo Honey Singh are busy shooting a song and dance sequence for the film, Ragini MMS 2.

Called Char Bottle Vodka, the duo have been busy for almost a week, shooting for the song on a closed set. In fact, so scared are the producers of the look being leaked that apart from having just the bare minimum technicians on the set, they have also instructed all the crew to unceremoniously switch off their mobile phones.

However, the biggest gossip doing the rounds is that Yo Yo Honey Singh has become a tad insecure with Sunny Leone over the past day or two.

The reason? Apparently, when people (and fans) realized that they were shooting this song at a particular studio, a huge crowd gathered to catch a glimpse. But ironically, they were there to see Sunny in the flesh (no pun intended) and not Honey.

After having acted in two Bollywood films, the former porn star has racked up a sizable fan base and they were hoping for a chance to see her shake her booty while shooting this song.

It is a myth propagated by Rekha’s Radha Krishna fantasy of uunrequited love. No agarbattis at this hokum altar please.

MIB: Marriage is no longer a game of bulls and cows. Mooing is passé and and nobody tolerates bullshit anymore… If anybody is smug and thinks their marriage is different from any other they are going to be in for surprises. Don’t tell me MIB didn’t warn you!

Hottest Bollywood Gossip

Hot on the heels of last week’s update when Shah Rukh Khan purposely avoided bumping into (and far from hugging!) Salman Khan at Mehboob Studio it came as a HUG-E surprise to see Salman & SRK sharing an extended embrace on stage at the Star Guild Awards on Thursday night.

OBVIOUSLY it was planned but even Salman Khan’s own father Salim Khan doubts they will ever be super close again…  And yet somehow, Aamir Khan has managed to have his own brand of cheeky fun at Salman & Katrina Kaif‘s expense without ever pissing off bhai. How like that?

Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan

It made headlines when Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan hugged for the second time (post their huge argument) at the Star Guild Awards recently. When we posted the photos for you, we asked whether you thought this meant there was a proper patch-up on the cards for the two. Time will only tell on that front, but, although the hug at Baba Siddique‘s iftaar party may have been spontaneous, this one was far from so.

Both the actors were aware in advance that they would have a run-in with each other, and since neither of them avoided it, we can say that they are obviously willing to acknowledge each other in public now. Was this all a publicity stunt for Jai Ho? We don’t know, but we’ll tell you what Industrywalla wrote in to say about this incident, and you can draw your own conclusions!

Industrywalla says: Salman and Shah Rukh hugging it out at the Star Guild Awards may have made the news, but in a way, you could say the whole act was ‘planned’. Salman was informed that SRK was winning the trophy and he would be on stage to collect it (while he would be there himself). Shah Rukh, knowing Salman was hosting the show, still chose to attend it and, of course, accept his award. So, both were well aware that they would end up interacting over the course of the show. But what happened afterwards is something worth taking note of too. The two actors exchanged a friendly SMS after the event on their way back home!

Does this mean that the two are on their way to rekindling their friendship and returning to the form they once were? Not necessarily. While we would like to believe so, it is still too soon to say that they will patch up and go back to becoming bum chums like before. But you never know – maybe a few more public hugs is just what the doctor ordered to get these two to sort everything out for good!

Salman Khan and Sunny Leone

While there are many people out there who have made a career out of having Sunny Leone take off her clothes, actor Salman Khan (who is known for ordering his women to cover-up and look decent), did the exact opposite and draped the former porn star in a saree on stage at the Star Guild Awards.

Over the years, people from the industry have whispered about how Salman has the women in his family (and those close to him) keep themselves covered and wear “decent” clothes.

The only lady who doesn’t toe his line is his sister-in-law Malaika Arora Khan. She wears the sexiest of outfits and is often seen in form-fitting dresses which accentuate her curves.

Of course, according to the gossips, this is just one of the reasons why the two share cold vibes towards each other.

The rest of the Khan women (Arpita Khan, Seema Khan and Alvira Agnihotri) we hear, are happy to comply with Sallubhai’s wishes and hence you’ll  usually see them in non-sexy silhouettes.

Even his girlfriends (over the years) have dressed modestly. The most notable being Katrina Kaif who began to flaunt her body in earnest only after they officially broke up. For example, you would never have seen her wear a bikini in public if she was dating Salman – not even in a foreign locale!

Tanisha & Armaan

This just in – Tanisha Mukerji and Armaan Kohli are going very strong! A common friend of the two reveals that Tanisha speaks to Armaan’s dad on a daily basis and he has already started calling her beta fondly!

Tanuja Mukerji and Kajol also have given their blessings to her relationship and Armaan seems to have made a promise to Tanisha to work on his anger management issues. The two are also being offered a bunch of reality shows together but it sounds like they have rejected most of them – so far. (Probably for the best!) But you never know, maybe they’ll get one of those ridiculous spin-off shows about celebrity couples… would you watch?

PS. If they gave the Khan Sisters another season with Gauhar Khan and Kushal Tandon in the picture I bet everyone would watch that!

Alia Bhatt

For one song in Highway (called Sooha Saha), the film’s leading lady, Alia Bhatt, has gone behind the mic to sing a stanza. This is the first time we’ve heard Alia sing and, unexpectedly, she has a lovely voice that really works with this song – it’s not just another “promotional gimmick” as these things sometimes can be. The track is a soulful lullaby, and A R Rahman and Imtiaz Ali both agreed that it would be a lot more poignant, in the context of the film, if Alia sang a certain part herself – although, it turns out that Rahman was skeptical at first!

A R Rahman says:

We have this lullaby, Sooha Saha, in Highway… Imtiaz said Alia has a great voice and I didn’t trust him. Then she learned the song and sang to me and I was pretty impressed with her natural ability too. We guided her a little bit to perfect the singing. She did it twice and then we got it almost right and now it sounds great.

In the video, you can see Rahman guiding her through the song and instructing her on how to carry her notes. She does a great job, and you can even hear her unedited voice in the short bit that’s directly recorded in the studio. From whatever I’ve heard so far, I really like this song, so – for me – this is a hattrick of sorts because I love the previous two tracks as well. (Make sure you listen to Patakha Guddi and Maahi Ve!)

Alia Bhatt says:

“It was unreal… I am a bathroom singer, but to have the opportunity to sing a song composed by Rahman sir was unbelievable. This film is so close to my heart, not just for acting but for singing too now!”

The song is also sung by Zeb Bangash (of the famous Pakistani duo Zen & Habiya). Can’t wait to hear the full track!

Ranveer Singh

Turns out that Sonakshi Sinha isn’t the only one who has been feeling upset about the current awards season. Her Lootera co-star, Ranveer Singh, is feeling rather blue these days himself. In fact, it looks like he’s in no real mood to attend the award ceremonies but is still going for one reason only, and a rather adorable one at that. Here’s what Industrywalla spilled to us about Ranveer’s current state of mind.

Industrywalla says: Ranveer Singh is not in the best of moods these days. Just like his co-star, Sonakshi Sinha, he too feels his performances last year have gone unrewarded. Although he is usually full of life and cheerful, especially when in public, Ranveer was heard sulking to his BFF Arjun Kapoor about how the award shows are rigged and that they are only giving Farhan Akhtar all the trophies for Bhaag Milkha Bhaag.

However, he did specify that there is one particular reason he is still going for all these events. The actor wants to be there to cheer on his girlfriend, Deepika Padukone, who has been sweeping all the awards this season and is expected to continue doing so for the remaining ceremonies. Still, having said that, it is rather strange that he’s dissing the award shows considering he’s hosting one himself in the coming weeks! (Although, that is a music awards show – the Global Indian Music Awards, which is currently in its fourth edition. He had earlier hosted the second edition as well and has claimed that he’s “happy to celebrate an integral part of the Indian culture with the biggest names in music today.”)

Despite not being too happy about the way things are shaping up with award functions, Ranveer has still been doing the rounds of them and has showed up looking dapper every time. Remember to cast your vote for your favourite look here!

Alia Bhatt

At a surprise announcement over the weekend, A R Rahman and Imtiaz Ali revealed that Alia Bhatt has sung a song titled Sooha Saha for their upcoming film, Highway. That’s quite a feat for the young Alia, for whom Highway is just the second film. When Alia was on Koffee With Karan, Karan had asked her to sing but obviously, we had no clue she would have sung a song for her film. Here are more details on how this happened and how it has turned out.

At the annual show, Umang organised for Mumbai Police, Bollywood’s favourites, Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif, Hrithik Roshan, Ranveer Singh and others shook a leg. But I believe the highlight of the night was Sachin Tendulkar being felicitated by Amitabh Bachchan. Two lving legends on one stage, just the way we like it.

On the other hand, the fittest in Bollywood took to Mumbai streets yesterday for the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon. We spotted John Abraham, Neha Dhupia, Lisa Haydon, Rahul Bose, Juhi Chawla and a bunch of others.

On every episode of Koffee With Karan, it’s usually Karan Johar doing the grilling while his guests sit on the other sofa and (sometimes unintentionally) spill some secrets about their life. This particular episode, though, with Akshay Kumar, featured the tables turning somewhat. Not only did Akki put KJo through a rapid fire of his own, but earlier on in the show, Karan even revealed something big: the name of the only woman in his life who he was in love with.

While speaking to Akshay, Karan said, ”The only woman in my life who I thought I was in love with was your wife. I was madly in love with her. I named my character in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai Tina because I was in love with her.”

Karan knew Twinkle Khanna (who he calls by her actual name, Tina) since they were six years old. The two attended the same boarding school, and KJo even told this funny story where Twinkle convinced him that he had no reason to stay at the school and should escape instead. She gave him a full plan and told him which road to take, but didn’t mention that there would be a watchman on the way! So Karan ended up getting caught by the watchman, who took him back to the school. And as you can imagine, it didn’t end too well for Karan, who had to stand in front of the assembly and be used as an example for the rest of the students.

Thus began their friendship, and, several years later, Karan ended up offering the role of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai to Twinkle – since he wrote it for her and even named the character Tina after her. However, Twinkle said she would take three days to decide, and then declined the role after that period. Now, Karan says she claims that she “created Rani Mukerji” and was a terrible actress herself so Karan got “saved.” That’s the kind of candidness that both Karan and Akshay love about her.

Later on in the show, during Karan’s rapid fire, he was asked which star wife he would want to be married to. The host replied saying, “Tina. Undoubtedly she is the first love of my life.”
